Teacher of Russian
We are currently seeking to fill the position of Teacher of Russian at City of London School.
An outstanding teacher of Russian is required for September 2026, or January 2027. The School has a long-standing record of high academic achievement (93.4% of A-level entries gained A* to B grades in 2025, 63% Grade 9 at GCSE, 86% 9/8 and 96% 9-7 GCSE in 2025). There is also much happening in terms of co-curricular activities, and all staff are expected to be fully involved in School life. The ability to offer another modern language that is taught at CLS is desirable but not essential.
Russian begins at CLS in the Fourth Form (Year 10) as an ab initio course. We would normally expect a class of up to 15 pupils who sit the Edexcel GCSE (1RU0) after two years. This is a challenging course and the majority, although not always all, of those who opt to study Russian are amongst our brightest pupils. Results have been consistently outstanding, and we have considerable success at high-tariff universities with pupils doing Modern Languages.
CLS was named by the Sunday Times as London Independent Secondary School of the Year 2020, and occupies fine, modern buildings near St. Paul's Cathedral overlooking the Thames, opposite the Tate Modern. There are impressive off-site sports facilities in south east London.
It is a top priority for the School that we both attract and retain a staff body that is not only excellent, but also reflects the London community within which we live, and our diverse pupil body. As such, it is of paramount importance to the School that we acknowledge our current imbalance and seek to rectify this. We are therefore particularly keen to encourage applications from candidates who have African Caribbean, Asian or other Minority Ethnic or mixed heritage. All appointments are merit-based, following a fair, transparent recruitment process. In accordance with the Equality Act 2010, however, the School may employ positive action where diverse candidates demonstrate the ability to perform the role equally well.
City of London School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.
CLS Teaching Pay Scale £40,480 £65,150 (plus two progression points to £67,270 and £69,450) 2025 - 2026.
Further information about the School and a copy of the most recent ISI Inspection report are available on the school website.
Closing date: 9am 20 April 2026.
Interviews will be held on 24 April 2026.
