The King’s School, Canterbury is seeking to appoint an experienced and highly skilled English as an Additional Language (EAL) specialist to support international pupils.

The King’s School, Canterbury is seeking to appoint an experienced and highly skilled English as an Additional Language (EAL) specialist to support international pupils across three core areas: IELTS preparation for sixth form pupils, targeted English language and literature support for pupils in Years 9 to 11, and contribution to an Intensive EAL Summer School. The role is fixed term for one year initially with the possibility of review and renewal.

The successful candidate may be a qualified teacher or a specialist practitioner with substantial EAL and IELTS experience. This role is particularly well suited to an individual with strong academic English expertise, confidence in one-to-one and small group teaching, and a detailed, practical understanding of IELTS assessment and progression. The postholder will play a key role in the school’s developing IELTS provision and in enabling EAL pupils to access the wider curriculum successfully.

It is envisaged that the appointed candidate would teach the following scheduled IELTS classes during term time:

Monday: 14:30–15:30 and 17:00–18:00

Wednesday: 17:00–18:00

Friday: 17:00–18:00

In addition, the postholder would provide approximately five hours per week of one-to-one English language support, delivered flexibly across the week. There is also the potential for the role to expand to include an additional EAL teaching group in Shell, subject to pupil need and timetabling.

Taken together, the role is expected to involve approximately 10 to 15 hours of EAL teaching per week during term time (33 weeks).

The school also runs an Intensive EAL Summer School in August. While contribution to the Summer School is not a requirement of this appointment, the opportunity to undertake additional contracted hours for this provision can be discussed separately with the appointed candidate.
