Teacher of Classics
We are looking for a dynamic and well-qualified Teacher of Classics to join us from September 2026 on a 1 year fixed term, part-time (0.5FTE) contract to August 2027.
The Portsmouth Grammar School is a leading co-educational school located in the historic heart of Portsmouth. We are very much a family school known for excellent teaching, superb pastoral care and wide-ranging co-curricular opportunities and offer an education across the age range from Pre-School to Sixth Form.
We are seeking to appoint a dynamic and well-qualified teacher of Classics from September 2026 on a 1 year fixed term, part-time (0.5FTE) contract to August 2027. The successful candidate will be able to teach Latin from Year 7 to GCSE level with an ability to teach A Level an advantage. The ability to teach Classical Civilisation at Year 13 would also be an advantage.
Candidates should be well qualified subject specialists, able to inspire young people with their enthusiasm for Classics and for teaching, and ensure all pupils reach their full potential. Applications are invited from all those who meet the above criteria, whether they are newly qualified, or more experienced teachers. In addition, PGS has a strong track record in supporting unqualified teachers (UQTs) as they embark on their teaching careers; applications from UQTs are also very welcome.

Teachers’ planning is informed by assessment for learning, ensuring all pupils make very good progress in each lesson. Our pupils are encouraged to take responsibility for their learning and understand how they can improve using constructive feedback provided by their teachers.
The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the pastoral and co-curricular life of the school. It is an expectation that all teachers will have a tutor group or act as a co-tutor or cover tutor within the pastoral system.

The closing date is midday on Monday 11th May 2026. Interviews will be scheduled to take place on Wednesday 20th May 2026 with shortlisted candidates invited to teach an observed lesson as part of the interview day. Shortlisted candidates are asked to allow a whole day for the interview process.
