Assistant Head of Hockey (Academy Manager)
Required for April 2026 to play a key role in leading the development and delivery of the Tormead Hockey Academy
Tormead School is an academically selective independent school for 800 girls aged 4–18, located a short stroll from the historic town centre of Guildford, just 40 minutes by train to London, with excellent transport links by road and rail.
We are seeking to appoint an ambitious, dynamic and highly skilled Assistant Head of Hockey to lead the development and delivery of the Tormead Hockey Academy. This appointment comes at a pivotal moment in the school’s sporting journey, as hockey continues to grow as a performance-level sport with serious ambitions and sustained competitive success.
Tormead has established itself as a rising force within the county and regional hockey landscape, reaching county and regional finals in both indoor and outdoor competitions in recent seasons. With significant investment in the development of a new state-of-the-art hockey facility at the Urnfield, including a brand-new astro, Tormead is poised to accelerate its ambition to become a recognised regional and national leader in girls’ hockey. The successful candidate will play a central role in shaping this next chapter. The post has a strategic remit designed to drive performance standards, advance the academy’s long-term growth, and elevate Tormead’s presence within both the Surrey performance pathway and the national schools’ game.
The role combines high-quality coaching with programme leadership, operational management, community engagement and commercial oversight. Working closely with the Head of Hockey, the Assistant Head of Hockey will oversee twice-weekly evening academy sessions, manage paid-for holiday hockey camps, coordinate an expanded team of specialist coaching staff, and support the delivery of Games lessons, training and fixtures across the Prep and Senior School.
A key aspect of the role will be marketing and promotion of all paid-for hockey opportunities, including academy membership, camps and community initiatives. The post holder will work jointly with the Head of Hockey, Director of Sport and the External Relations team to strengthen the visibility and reputation of Tormead Hockey, ensuring the academy continues to grow as a hub of excellence. The role also includes maintaining and enhancing the School’s partnership with Guildford Hockey Club to ensure coherent and mutually beneficial opportunities for players across the wider community.
Day-to-day responsibilities include programme design, staffing, facility management, player development, video analysis, safeguarding, and the coordination of fixtures and tournaments. The successful candidate will lead at least one age group within the school programme, model outstanding professional standards and contribute to the broader sporting life of the School.
We are seeking an experienced, motivated and forward-thinking hockey professional with a strong background in school, club or performance environments. Applicants should ideally have performance or national league playing experience and must demonstrate proven coaching expertise, leadership capability and the ability to inspire and develop young athletes. Strong communication, organisation and confidence with marketing and video analysis tools are essential, along with a commitment to delivering exceptional hockey opportunities for girls.
In return, we offer a friendly, inclusive and ambitious working environment, alongside access to outstanding new sports facilities, free school lunches, and significant opportunities for continued professional development. This is an exciting leadership opportunity for a coach seeking to advance their career within a high-performing and rapidly evolving school sports programme.
