Deputy Director of Music
Winchester College is seeking an ambitious, academically gifted, and dynamic leader to serve as the Deputy Director of Music (DDoM). This role is a key leadership position within one of the UK's premier music departments, requiring a professional who can blend strategic management with high-level performance and academic excellence. Working closely with the Director of Music, the successful candidate will help embed a culture of joy, inclusivity, and musical outstandingness. This role is ideally suited to a keyboard specialist and provides rewarding opportunities for performance, alongside teaching and pastoral responsibilities.
The Role
Accountable to the Director of Music for co-curricular operations and the Head of Academic Music for teaching quality, the DDoM ensures the smooth daily running of the department while maintaining exceptional musical standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Departmental Leadership & Management
- Strategic Support: Act as the primary deputy to the Director of Music, coordinating the work of the Heads of Faculty and serving as the Head of Keyboard.
- Team Leadership: Lead the instrumental lesson programme, including the recruitment, support, and professional development of a high-performing team of Visiting Music Teachers (VMTs).
- Operational Oversight: Line manage the Music Administrator, manage budgets for instrument maintenance and tuning, and coordinate the annual calendar of concerts, competitions, and drama collaborations.
- Admissions & Outreach: Assist the Director of Music in attracting top-tier talent through admissions events and scholarship marking.
Co-Curricular & Performance
- Ensemble Management: Oversee departmental ensembles, ensuring the participation and welfare of music award holders while driving high performance standards.
- Accompaniment: Provide high-level keyboard accompaniment for concerts, services, lessons, and exams.
- Events: Coordinate solo performing opportunities, allocate accompanists, and oversee practical music examinations to drive continued success.
Academic Teaching & Pastoral Care
- Academic Delivery: Teach a high-quality timetable across all age ranges, including A-level and Oxbridge preparation, while generating innovative digital resources.
- Pastoral Commitment: Serve as a tutor within a boarding house and maintain a visible presence in the department, with a focus on pupil safeguarding and wellbeing during evenings and weekends.
- Tours & Trips: Participate in the planning and accompanying of domestic and international music tours, occasionally outside of school terms.
About You
We are looking for an experienced educator and performer with the interpersonal skills required to manage a complex programme and motivate a diverse team of professionals.
Professional Expertise & Skills:
- Educational Background: A good honours degree in Music (postgraduate qualification desirable) and experience teaching academic music across Key Stages 3-5.
- Musicality: A proven track record of professional performance as a conductor, instrumentalist, or singer. Strong keyboard/accompaniment skills are highly advantageous.
- Management Ability: Experience in management within a similar school setting, with the ability to lead people, solve problems creatively, and manage budgets.
- Communication: An effective verbal and written communicator who can inspire pupils and engage professionally with parents and colleagues.

What We Offer
- Start Date: 1 September 2026 (flexible for the right candidate).
- Contract & Tenure: A permanent teaching contract within the Music Department. The DDoM responsibility is held for an initial 5-year term, extendable by agreement for a further 3 years.
- Salary: Winchester has its own generous salary scale (above the national scale) plus a Special Responsibility Allowance (SRA) for the Deputy Director role.
- Accommodation: Highly suitable residential accommodation may be available with this position.
