The School seeks to appoint an inspiring and technically proficient Fives Coach to support the development of this traditional sport within our vibrant co-curricular programme. This is an exciting opportunity to coach motivated pupils across a range of abilities, from beginners to elite players, especially as the School expands its sporting offering. The successful individual will be a passionate advocate for the game, possessing the communication skills and technical expertise to foster a love of the sport while maintaining the high standards of sportsmanship and competitive excellence the School is known for.

The Role

Reporting to the Master in Charge of Fives and the Director of Sport, the Fives Coach is responsible for the delivery of high-quality coaching sessions, the management of fixtures, and the technical progression of pupils.

Your key responsibilities include:

Coaching and Pupil Development

  • Technical Instruction: Deliver engaging and structured coaching sessions for pupils of all ages, focusing on skill acquisition, strategy, and physical conditioning.
  • Performance Monitoring: Assess pupil progress, providing constructive feedback to help individuals reach their full potential in both internal and external competitions.
  • Inclusive Excellence: Ensure that coaching is accessible and challenging for all, supporting both recreational players and those competing at a national level.
  • Sportsmanship: Instill a strong sense of fair play, etiquette, and discipline, consistent with the School's values.

Fixtures and Administration

  • Match Coordination: Assist in the organization and supervision of home and away fixtures, ensuring all logistics and pupil safety protocols are managed effectively.
  • Tournament Support: Accompany and coach pupils during national tournaments and regional competitions.
  • Equipment & Facilities: Monitor the condition of the Fives courts and equipment, reporting any maintenance requirements to the Master in Charge.
  • Communication: Maintain effective communication with pupils, parents, and opposing schools regarding match schedules and team selections.

Compliance and Professionalism

  • Safeguarding: Uphold the highest standards of safeguarding and child protection at all times, both on and off the courts.
  • Health & Safety: Conduct risk assessments for coaching sessions and fixtures, ensuring a safe environment for all participants.
  • Professional Development: Stay current with coaching techniques and safety regulations within the sport of Fives.

About You

We are seeking a dedicated and energetic coach with a deep understanding of Fives (Winchester, Rugby, or Eton) and the ability to inspire young people.

Essential Skills & Qualities

  • Technical Expertise: A high level of personal playing ability and a deep technical understanding of the game of Fives.
  • Coaching Experience: Proven experience in coaching sport, ideally within an educational or high-performance environment.
  • Communication: Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate pupils and communicate clearly with staff and parents.
  • Reliability: Highly organized, punctual, and able to manage the logistics of a busy sporting calendar.
  • Professional Conduct: A positive role model who remains calm under pressure and demonstrates integrity and sound judgment.
  • Safeguarding: A strong commitment to child protection and the welfare of young people.
  • Qualifications: Level 1 or 2 Coaching Qualification (desirable) and valid First Aid training.

What We Offer

  • Start Date: As soon as possible.
  • Hours of Work: This is a zero-hours position
  • Salary: The hourly rate is £15 per hour (excluding holiday pay).
